Ermida de Santa Marta

This small rectangular-shaped single-nave hermitage is placed at the Santa Marta peninsula. The chapel was involved in some of the cruellest episodes in the history of the town. Due to its localisation the chapel was continuously harassed by pirates attacking the town. The hermitage was razed and burnt to the ground several times: in 1585 the notorious pirate Drake was repelled by local defending forces and people when he was destroying and burning the chapel. Once in peace and quiet, neighbours their own rebuilt the hermitage. However, from its transition-Romanesque former style only the Southern door with semicircular arch and flat tympanum could be kept.
